| HMS Victory
stands today as the world's oldest commissioned warship.
Still manned by Officers and Ratings of the Royal Navy,
the Victory has seen over 200 years of almost continuous
service.Best known for her role in the Battle of Trafalgar,
the Victory currently has a dual role as the flagship of
the Second Sea Lord and as a living museum to the Georgian
navy. |

Warrior |
HMS Warrior,
as you arrive at Portsmouth Historic Dockyard, the stunning
sleek, black lines of Britain's first iron-hulled, armoured
battleship, take your breath away.The pride of Queen Victoria,
Warrior revolutionised warship construction. Powered by
steam and sail, she was the largest and fastest ship of
her day. Her most radical innovation was her citadel -
an armoured box housing her guns. |

Mary Rose |
| The Mary Rose
is the only 16th century warship on display anywhere in
the world. Built between 1509 and 1511, she was one of the
first ships able to fire a broadside, and was a firm favourite
of King Henry VIII.After a long and successful career, she
sank accidentally during an engagement with the French fleet
in 1545. Her rediscovery and raising were seminal events
in the history of nautical archaeology. |

| The Dockyard Apprentice - During the
18th and 19th centuries Portsmouth Royal Dockyard was the
greatest industrial complex in the world. Perhaps its greatest
achievements came at the end of the period when it built
a series of huge highly innovative battleships, culminating
in 1906 with the famous Dreadnought. |

fleet represented through two-dimensional profiled metal
ships, graphics and video. A world map shows the deployment
of Naval Task Forces around the world with inset video screens
showing real life footage of Navy and Marines activities

| D-Day Museum and Overlord EmbroideryThe
D-Day Museum was opened in 1984 to commemorate the 40th
Anniversary of D-Day. Its centrepiece is the magnificent
Overlord Embroidery commissioned by Lord Dulverton of Batsford
(1915-92) as a tribute to the sacrifice and heroism of those
men and women who took part in Operation Overlord. The Museum
was extended in 1994 for D-Day 50. |

Dickens Birthplace |
| The famous writer Charles Dickens was born in this modest
house in Portsmouth, England in 1812. The house has miraculously
survived and is now preserved as a museum furnished in the
style of 1809 which is when John and Elizabeth Dickens set
up the first home of their married life there. |

| The main displays feature the 'Story of Portsmouth' which
is introduced by an audio visual history of the city. Walk
through Portsdown Hill's chalk tunnel and meet Stone Age
man, a wholly rhinoceros and the skeleton of a Saxon warrior

| The Records Office
is housed in the same building as Portsmouth City Museum.
It holds the official records of Portsmouth City Council
which survive from the 14th century; local Anglican and
Non-Conformist church registers and records from 16th century;
large collections of material deposited by local businesses,
families and other organisations as well as thousands of
local maps and plans, photographs and picture postcards,
all of which can be consulted in the first-floor public
Search Room. |

| Southsea
Castle |
| Built in 1544, the
Castle was part of a series of fortifications constructed
by Henry VIII around England's coasts to protect the country
from invaders. Barely was the work completed when Henry
VIII's flagship, the Mary Rose, tragically sank in front
of the Castle. During the English Civil War, nearly a century
later, the Castle was captured for the only time in its
history, by Parliamentarian forces. |

| A massive man-made
island, sitting a mile offshore from Portsmouth Harbour,
Spitbank Fort is one of the most unusual military buildings
ever constructed and one of the most unique venues to be

Cumberland |
| This is probably
the finest example of a five sided 18th century bastioned
fort. It dates from 1740 but was extensively rebuilt between
1785 - 1820. The fort is designed to be as low as possible
but still allow the gun batteries to fire. It was used by
the Royal Marines until 1973. |

Castle |
| Discover
2000 year's of history at this magnificent coastal castle.
Situated two miles to the east of Fareham, Portchester
has grown up around the approaches to Portchester Castle.
The Romans built a naval base here in the third century
to guard against attack and today the walls are the most
complete remaining example of their fortifications in northern
Europe. There are spectacular views over Portsmouth Harbour
and the remains of the Castle from the top of the Norman
Keep. Inside the Castle is a fascinating interactive exhibition
of England under Roman control, which is complemented by
a series of colourful events and vivid re-enactments. |
